MAITAI RANGIROA
Our Resort Report
OUR Thoughts on Maitai Rangiroa, Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia.
Maitai Rangiroa may be a boutique resort with only 34 units, but it provides a full range of resort facilities and services. Rangiroa is made up of an exceptionally large number of narrow motu islands which surround an enormous lagoon; in fact, the lagoon is so big that when you face the lagoon from Maitai Rangiroa you get the distinct impression that you are looking at the open sea and not an enclosed lagoon.
As you enter the resort you note that the resort gardens are beautifully maintained and that none of the garden bungalows which are spread throughout the grounds amongst the coconut palms is very far away from the water. The Resort restaurant and the separate bar are located beside the beach and both have a terrace deck facing the lagoon and The Pier out into the lagoon with its thatched hut at the end. The Pier is a great spot to enter the water for swimming and some of the best snorkelling in the South Pacific. The Pier is also a great spot for private romantic dinners.
Rangiroa is volcanic in origin, making it very rocky. It has very few sand beaches, but because of this, the water in the lagoon is really clear and that’s what makes snorkelling and diving so good here. On the lagoon front outside the Maitai Rangiroa, a couple of low rock terraces have been built up and filled in behind with a mixture of sand and small pieces of white coral to form the beach, so take some light footwear to use when walking on the beach.
The Resort restaurant is very good. For variety, there are 2 local restaurants within a short walk and there is also a food market (with very reasonable Hinano Beer prices) just across the road.
The airport is only a five-minute drive away.
