Our Thoughts on Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa, Motu Tautau, Taha'a, French Polynesia
Le Taha’a really is a haven of relaxation and awesome views and unobtrusive service. There is a great view from every accommodation type, the Hawaiki Nui Restaurant which opens for breakfast and dinner is perched on a platform up above the ground amongst the palm trees and the view from the terrace through the palms to the lagoon and islands is very special. Titiraina Restaurant, open for lunch, is right on the beach with views over the lagoon, the Manuia swim-up Bar in the resort’s horizon pool provides special views and the Spa and the Fitness Centre offer a perfectly relaxing view over the private interior lagoon lake. The underwater views are -no less special. There is something very relaxing about spending hours in the lagoon, snorkelling or just drifting with the current over the coral gardens.
Motu Tautau is a real gem of an island. Not only is it a private haven for Le Taha’a guests, (and that’s special in itself), but the island has many outstanding features to enjoy. The natural white-sand beaches are dotted all around the island and there are tiny islets within wading distance of the shore to venture out to and enjoy a hammock strung between a couple of palm trees virtually surrounded by the lagoon waters. There is a track over to the outer edge of Motu Tautau where you can sit on a rocky shore and watch the Pacific Ocean washing against the fringing reef. Then there is the internal lake just behind the main hotel buildings where the Spa and the Fitness Centre buildings encroach on the lake from the land.
The 3 restaurant venues mean there is plenty of variety of dining options and an excellent Polynesian Night with feasting and entertainment every Tuesday, but if you have a wish to venture off the resort for a local experience you can do no better than Chez Louise Restaurant over on Taha’a proper. There are many “Romantic Rendez-vous” available at Le Taha’a – in-room “Milky Way Dinner”, a private dinner on the beach, a dinner on a private motu to name a few!
We recommend at least 2 local-experience tours on Taha’a; the Vanilla Farms and Pearl Farm Tours. It’s also quite feasible to rent a car on Taha’a mainland and take a drive around the natural landmarks as well as the villages with their pretty churches and the houses where the locals live.
Taha’a pairs very well with Bora Bora for those people seeking a two-island experience. Bora Bora is not quite as laid-back as Taha’a, so a few days at Le Taha’a followed by a few days on Bora Bora works really well and of course, both are exceptionally beautiful. It is easy to fly between the 2 islands and the scheduled flight takes only 15 minutes. However, there are two spectacular options available and that is either a 20-minute helicopter flight from the Le Taha’a heliport to Bora Bora enjoying the simply amazing scenery around Taha’a, Raiatea and Bora Bora. If you choose to stay at a resort on Bora Bora which has its own heliport, you can transfer direct resort to resort and totally avoid airports at both ends.
For those who prefer to stay put in the one resort but would like to experience the Bora Bora Lagoon, there is a day tour option from Le Taha’a to Bora Bora by boat. Departing Le Taha’a at 8:00am and returning at around 5:00pm this magnificent day trip will take approximately an hour by boat to reach Bora Bora’s Lagoon with the spectacular craggy peak of Mt Otemanu gradually increasing in size as you approach. The transfer launch will drop you at Vaitape Wharf and you have the day to explore Bora Bora starting with a tour of the lagoon by boat.

Your Accommodation Options
Le Taha’a Island Resort has an accommodation option to suit almost every need. Their signature accommodation is probably the Beach Villas and the Royal Beach Villas, but ALL the accommodation, both the land-based Villas and the Overwater Suites at this superb resort are true 5 Star quality. Décor is a pleasing fusion of contemporary and traditional Polynesian styles with light painted walls, natural polished timber floor and high woven cathedral ceilings under the naturally thatched roofs. The fittings are all top-notch.
The Villas here are special because, unlike the majority of land-based Villas at island resorts, which generally have a garden view or face inward to a private pool or courtyard, the Villas at Le Taha’a feature not only private courtyards and a private plunge pool, but a superb absolute beach-front location as well as wonderful lagoon views. All the Villas are strategically placed along the south and south-east facing beaches on to the lagoon and catch the cooling south-easterly breezes. Beach Villas, (as distinct from Royal Beach Villas), have one separate air-conditioned bedroom which has an ensuite bathroom which opens to a private outdoor courtyard featuring a lovely outdoor bath. For those guests who prefer to bathe in a more conventional setting the interior part of the big ensuite bathroom includes a shower.
The bedroom and separate living area opens directly on to a private deck which faces the beach. Off deck from the living area, there is a private plunge pool and a private garden. At one side of the deck there is a high-roofed cabana for comfortable shaded lounging - there are open-air sun loungers on the central deck.
The two Royal Villas are simply magnificent with 2 air-conditioned bedrooms, each with a private indoor/outdoor bathroom. The Royal Villas are ideal for 2 couples or for families. Bedroom 1, which opens to the separate air-conditioned Living Area, includes a large deck facing the beach and Bedroom 2 opens to a private garden with a good-sized plunge pool.
The Overwater Suites are huge! One big open-plan room opens to decks on 3 sides. The main deck includes a thatched-roof cabana for guests to take in the view from a shaded spot and steps lead down to a lower deck close to the lagoon. The room itself is magnificent. The bed is not hard up against a back wall but stands out from the wide-opening doors to the bathroom making a desk space behind the bed from which guests can look up and directly out over the bed to the outside view. That makes working at the desk quite a challenge as the view continually beckons! The bathroom doors between the bedroom and the bathroom can be opened right up if you wish and this combines the whole internal area of the suite resulting in an amazing combined space. The bathroom features a separate bath, a separate shower and 2 vanities. At the foot of the bed there is a glass-topped table which moulds to the contour of the foot of the bed and coincides with a glass panel in the floor of the suite giving a view of the sea-life under the suite. It is soo pleasant relaxing on the bed and watching the marine world beneath. Outside the suite the decks are placed to afford privacy from the adjacent Suites.
Overwater Suites are all the same design and layout and are grouped into 3 tariff categories depending on their outlook and position on the 4 strings of overwater pontoons. There are two distinct groups of Overwater Suites; one group is accessed off the south-facing lagoon beach, the second off the east-facing beach. The Overwater Suites off the south-facing beach which face west are designated “Sunset Overwater Suites” and these provide guests with spectacular sunset views and a view down the lagoon towards Raiatea. Of the second group of Overwater Suites accessed off the east-facing beach, there is one row of Suites facing north up the lagoon towards Bora Bora and these are aptly named “Bora Bora Overwater Suites”. The majority of Overwater Suites face over the lagoon towards the Taha’a mainland and are designated “Taha’a Premium Overwater Suites”. Four of the Suites on the end of the pontoons are designated “End of Pontoon Overwater Suites” and guests in these suites enjoy a feeling of solitude with uninterrupted views to the north, south and east, up and down the lagoon.
