SAVAII LAGOON RESORT
Our Resort Report

OUR Thoughts on Savaii Lagoon Resort, Fagamalo, Savaii
This place is a real little gem. It’s a mid-range property, located on the north coast of Savaii in the Fagamalo district which is approximately one third of the way around the island from the ferry arrival point. Savaii Lagoon Resort is virtually right on a beautiful white-sand beach which it shares with Le Lagoto Resort which is just along the beach.

The main town on Savaii is around 40 minutes by road away, so dining out when you stay on Savaii Island is not normally an option. However, guests of Savaii Lagoon Resort enjoy some good dining options. Firstly, all accommodation types here include light cooking facilities. They also have a terrific Beach Bar and Restaurant located virtually on the beach. The Beach Bar & Restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner each evening for sunset dining. Dinner menus change daily and follow what is fresh at the market. There is a village shop right across the road which stocks a range of simple food items and a pizza shop close by gets rave reviews. Just down the beach, there is a restaurant at Le Lagoto Resort, so there is a good range of dining options for guests to enjoy here. Water is UV filtered and safe to drink.

The resort doesn’t have a swimming pool, but that’s no problem as the shallow lagoon off the beach is clean and clear and great for swimming at high tide. When the tide is low, there is a swimming hole around 100 metres along the beach which is great for swimming at all tides. A Glass-bottom Boat has recently started operating in the lagoon and the resort offers fishing charters which also operate from the resort’s lagoon. Kayaks and dinghies are available for guests to use free of charge.

So, how long should you plan to stay at Savaii Lagoon Resort? That really depends on the type of holiday break you are looking for. The resort has a policy of only accepting bookings for a minimum of 2 nights stays (although they will accept 1 night bookings on the rare occasion that there happens to be a 1 night gap between existing bookings). However, for those singles, couples or families seeking a simple, natural, laid-back beach break in a safe, friendly, tropical beach environment, we would -recommend a stay of at least 5 or 6 nights.

Your Accommodation Options
Savaii Lagoon Resort has only 11 units, 9 of which are on the beach frontage and 2 are Garden Bungalows - neither of the Garden Bungalows is any more than 50 metres away from the beach. All the bungalows are modern with spacious, light appointments giving them a “bright and airy” feeling which sets them apart from the slightly darker, more traditional Samoan/Polynesian style fales found in some of Samoa’s other boutique resorts. Each Bungalow has a nice shaded patio with outdoor furniture. All accommodation has light cooking facilities including a microwave oven, electric frying pan, toaster, electric kettle and fridge. Milk, tea and coffee are provided to the rooms daily.

All "Beachfront" accommodation units have terrific ensuite bathrooms which include a high-walled courtyard-style shower which is open-to-the-sky. This shower is part of the ensuite but is located in an outside walled courtyard immediately off the internal part of the bathroom.  The toilet and the bathroom vanity unit are in the interior part of the bathroom. The shower has an insect screened roof and is set off by a small, pretty tropical garden. It really is delightful taking a shower in these bathrooms at Savaii Lagoon Resort and the insect-screened roof over the shower ensures that only sunlight or the stars are sharing the shower with you!

Apart from one Garden Bungalow, all accommodation offers guests lagoon and sea views.  However, of the 6 “One Bedroom Beach Bungalows”, 2 have views partially obscured by the restaurant building which is right on the beach frontage.

Getting to and from Savaii Lagoon Resort
Depending on your flight itinerary, it may or may not be necessary to stay overnight on Upolu before taking the ferry crossing to Savaii. Our standard package arrangements for you will include a vehicle transfer from Faleolo International Airport or your Upolu/Apia accommodation to Mulifanua Wharf by transfer van or private vehicle and the scheduled 75 to 90-minute ferry crossing to Savaii where you arrive at Salelologa Wharf.  Until recently there have been two options for transfers between Salelologa Wharf and Savaii Lagoon Resort, one of which was picking up a taxi on arrival at the wharf (which was the slightly cheaper option) or being picked up at the wharf by a transfer vehicle operated by the resort and booked as a part of your travel package through Our Travel Specialists.  The option of taking a taxi has been discontinued due to the fact that, especially on full ferries, there is always a mad scramble for taxis at the wharf once the ferry arrives and tourists often miss out gaining a taxi. It can be a long wait for a taxi to return from the other side of the island, so now, all transfers are handled by the resort.

It can be quite an arduous day if you plan to make a direct connection to Savaii resorts immediately after arriving from an international flight, especially if there are children involved, as there is always the inevitable waiting around for connections between the arrival of the incoming international flight and the ferry sailing, not to mention the actual ferry crossing and the transfer to your resort once you arrive on Savaii.  For a less stressful experience (especially if your flight is delayed for any reason), we suggest you stay overnight on Upolu before making the crossing to Savaii - The Sheraton Samoa Beach Resort is the handiest major hotel property to Mulifanua Wharf.

Kids and Families

Savaii lagoon is a Family-Friendly Resort and
     children are welcome year-round.
