NENGONE VILLAGE HOTEL
Kawe Beach, Maré, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia
OUR Thoughts on Nengone Village Hotel
Rated 3 Star and certainly the highest-rated accommodation on Maré. Nengone Village Hotel is located on a natural, wild, white-sand rocky beach on the south-western side of Maré Island. Mare Island is only 42kms long by 16kms wide and comprises a raised coral atoll which has steep rugged cliffs on one side and interesting rocky beaches on the other. The interior of the island was originally the atoll lagoon so is fairly flat and dotted with fresh and salt water caves and waterholes. The waters surrounding Nengone Village within the shallow lagoon fringing the reef are clear and ideal for kayaking and snorkelling. The population of Maré is predominantly (90%) Melanesian and are renowned for their friendliness and welcoming of visitors. The mixing of Melanesian and French Cultures creates a unique environment of friendly sophistication and that is a hallmark of Nengone Village Hotel.
The hotel is slightly raised up above the lagoon giving good views out over the reef to the ocean; facing south delivers cooling breezes and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The Hotel has a pleasant central facility which includes a restaurant, bar, lounge and small boutique as well as a swimming pool and extensive pool decking. The restaurant specialises in local produce and seafood – oysters, crayfish, Tahitian Salad (marinated raw fish) etc.
As is the case with all the Loyalty Islands, a day or two to visit doesn’t do the place justice, you really need to give yourself time to slow down, dig in and enjoy the laid-back lifestyle while still being able to keep in touch with the outside world through the Wifi hotspot in the lounge.
Included in the tariff at Nengone Village:
● Use of Snorkelling Gear
● Use of Kayak
● Complimentary games of Table Tennis
● Complimentary hire of Board Games
