Our thoughts on Ohana Waikiki West
Very centrally located diagonally across Kuhio Avenue west of Ohana Waikiki East. Walk out the front of the hotel on to Kuhio Avenue and you are surrounded by all the facilities you could possibly need - shops, restaurants, a supermarket, lounge bars, bus stop for “The Bus” and the Waikiki Trolley. Staying here, you are easy walking distance to Waikiki Beach, the Zoo and the Aquarium. Over recent months a major redevelopment has commenced on the site of the former International Marketplace which is directly across Kuhio Avenue from Ohana Waikiki West and covers a large site between Kuhio and Kalakaua Avenues. The redevelopment involves the demolition of all the old buildings and has resulted in there being a large construction site right in the heart of Waikiki which will remain a construction site for the remainder of 2014 and 2015. The new centre is due to open in the first quarter of 2016 and until the redevelopment is more advanced it’s probably more convenient to access Kalakaua Avenue and Waikiki Beach via Kaiulani Avenue or Dukes Lane, both of which are only steps away from Ohana Waikiki West
Ohana Waikiki West is a big hotel comprising 659 rooms spread over 18 floors and bounded by Kuhio Avenue, Walina Street and Nahua Street. Its main claim to fame apart from its location and super value for money is the large number of rooms that have a kitchenette, and while the kitchenettes are compact, they do provide sufficient equipment and facilities to enable a meal to be cooked. There is a 2 burner cook-top and a microwave oven, a sink, coffee maker, toaster and under-counter fridge as well as plenty of cooking and serving utensils. Now, you would be a bit hard-pressed to serve up a full roast dinner unless you are a wizard with a microwave oven, but breakfast, lunch and light dinner would be no trouble at all. The Food Pantry supermarket which is almost next door on Kuhio Avenua opens until 1:00am is a real American-style supermarket although the prices do reflect its Waikiki location.
The rooms at Ohana Waikiki West was last renovated in 2004 and, to be fair, are now at the stage where another renovation will need to be planned, having said that, the rooms are very clean and well maintained. The bathrooms are fairly small and vanity space is very limited. We recommend you consider one of those fold-out hanging travel vanity bags for your bathroom gear. That makes the limited shelf space a non-issue. The hotel lobby was renovated in 2008.
This hotel has a nice sunny pool, free wifi in the lobby and wired internet access in the guest rooms. The unlimited use of the Pink (Shopping) Line on the Waikiki Trolley is a welcome bonus taking you to Ala Moana every 10 minutes or so. Sometimes the Trolley can be heavily patronised especially from Ala Moana back to the hotel and if you ever find you can’t get a seat, “The Bus” is a great alternative (it only costsUS$2.50 one way). “The Bus” is also a great way to get to Pearl Harbour, The Aloha Tower and anywhere else on the island of Oahu. The Bus stops in Kuhio Avenue almost right outside the Ohana Waikiki West.
