JEAN–MICHEL COUSTEAU RESORT FIJI
Our Resort Report
OUR Thoughts on Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji, Savusavu, Vanua Levu, Fiji
Savusavu Bay is a beautiful part of Fiji’s “Second Island” Vanua Levu just 20 minutes or so by road from Savusavu Airport. The bay is formed on the south-eastern side by a long peninsular of land which separates the Bay from the Koro Sea and the tip of this peninsular is the location of the impressive Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. The Resort generally fronts a north-facing sandy beach where the resort jetty extends out into the calm bay but there are also some spectacular Bures located above the reef on the point itself.
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is a high-quality resort which has been built and operates on the basis of being “environmentally responsible” (you would expect nothing less from a Resort bearing the Cousteau name) while producing a genuinely up-scale holiday experience. Over the past couple of years, the resort has undergone an improvement program which has kept it right up there as one of the highest quality resorts in Fiji.
In New Zealand, this Resort is probably best known for its remarkable “family-friendly” environment. In our opinion, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is a perfect choice for a family break – just take a look at the “Families and Kids” section below to understand why we rate it so highly for a family holiday. However, this Resort is way, way more than just a place for families.
While families are welcome all year, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort handles children so well, that apart from School Holiday periods other guests are not greatly impacted by children. Apart from the amazing Bula Club kids’ facility with its dedicated nannies and buddies program and the kids’ dining arrangements, there is an “adults-only” Serenity Swimming Pool and an Adult Dining Area and one accommodation type (The Villa) in which children are only accepted on a request basis. These arrangements make Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort a perfect choice for weddings, honeymoons, couples and dive holidays. Honeymooners, irrespective of any Honeymoon Special, receive a complimentary cocktail and Hors d’Oeuvres at sunset for 2 adults on each evening of guest’s stay.

The Presidential Villa:
The Villa is a work of art. It comprises several Bure pavilions all linked by decks at various levels and features amazing private walled courtyards off both bedrooms and sweeping views from the private horizon swimming pool and lounging areas.
The Master Bedroom, which is breath-taking in its size and layout, is bordered on 2 sides by a walled courtyard which contains a waterfall, an outdoor shower and a private grassed area for private sun-bathing. The internal bathroom which houses another shower, a spa bath and 2 separate vanities opens directly into the walled courtyard and the bedroom proper is raised 4 steps up from where the bathroom joins the bedroom. A deck seamlessly joins the bedroom and this deck leads out to the Day Bed Bure on the same level. The Day Bed Bure, which houses a King Day Bed, is a thatched bure which is open on the 2 sides where it joins the deck and the private swimming pool.
From the deck outside the main bedroom there are 4 steps down to a lower deck where you find a BBQ and an outdoor dining setting for 4. A separate lounge bure complete with kitchenette and bathroom, runs directly off this lower deck. The lounge bure converts to a second bedroom if required.
Maximum Occupancy: 5 guests (adults or adults and children)
Existing Bedding: 1 King Four-Poster Bed in the main bedroom and two fold-out Queen-size Sofa Beds in the lounge bure.
